Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
