Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
