As part of a notable escalation, Ukrainian forces reportedly used long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military authorities.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the location. This represents another instance where Ukrainian forces has utilized these powerful British-supplied missiles against targets inside Russian territory.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the primary providers of fuel products in Russia's south and is directly involved in providing for the military of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the War Front
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held productive talks with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation focused on potential pathways to bring the conflict to a close.
“It was a very productive conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “We explored some new ideas on how to bring real peace closer, and it concerns formats, meetings, and, of course, the timeline.”
Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country
In a parallel domestic matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was given to six years in a penal colony.
The charges are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the charges as politically motivated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to go on a hunger strike in protest.
Foreign Prisoner Case
The Kremlin indicated it is engaged with French authorities concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of espionage.
An official said that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources working to offer assistance and push for his release as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol
A theatre in Mariupol, which was leveled in a 2022 Russian airstrike while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its basement, is set to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.
Conversely, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the reopening as “dancing on bones.” This project is part of a wider Moscow effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of critics and property seizures from Ukrainian citizens.
The theatre is expected to open by the month's end with a show of a classic Russian story, following its reconstruction largely anew over the last 24 months.
