A large-scale search and rescue effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost boats carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Search Missions Launched

Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine sailors, according to a navy statement.

The boats had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to the Island

The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island endures repeated national electricity failures.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.

That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.

Broader Political Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Political pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from different leaders highlighting the complicated state of bilateral relations.

Reacting to recent statements, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to locate the boats and guarantee the security of the sailors.

To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
