New York's next mayor states plans to live in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he came from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
