New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
